Born from The Power of You program, Bundle Up is a Sustainability Office initiative aimed at promoting energy conservation during colder months by encouraging the campus community to dress in seasonally appropriate clothing and adopt energy-efficient practices.
Key Recommendations:
-
Dress in Layers: Wearing multiple layers, especially with materials like wool, helps maintain body warmth and reduces reliance on heating systems.
-
Close Windows and Doors: Keeping these closed prevents heat loss and maintains indoor temperatures.
-
Adjust Blinds Accordingly: Opening blinds during daylight hours allows solar warmth to enter, while closing them at night helps retain heat.
Heater Swap-Out Program:
To enhance energy efficiency, the Heater Swap-Out Program replaces personal ceramic space heaters with more efficient radiant models. This initiative has led to expected annual energy savings of 31,147 kWh and a reduction in energy costs by $2,015. With the potential to replace an additional 129 ceramic heaters on campus, the program anticipates further annual electricity consumption reductions of 191,333 kWh, saving more than $12,380.
Operational Achievements:
UBC Okanagan has optimized its district energy system (DES), sourcing 57% of its heat from renewable earth energy. Upgrades, including the installation of a high-efficiency condensing boiler and improvements to HVAC systems, have contributed to significant reductions in natural gas consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
By adopting these practices and supporting operational upgrades, the UBC Okanagan community contributes to energy conservation, increased building efficiency, cost savings, and reduced carbon emissions.
